After following 141 participants for 5 years, researchers determined that when people felt lonely their body was less able to fight off disease and inflammation. The significance here is that people who felt a depressing loneliness were susceptible whereas those who enjoyed their occasional alone times were not. Individuals that tended to be more social had better hormone levels to mitigate against disease in the blood stream and chronic inflammation.
The lesson here is that we need to not only watch our diets but feed our happiness levels with friends, family and good old fashioned fun.
